Guide Review - Sepultura - Dante XXI

Give credit to Sepultura for coming up with an unusual concept for their latest album. It is based on a book that is over 800 years old, Dante's "The Divine Comedy." In the book Dante journeyed through the three kingdoms of the dead: hell, purgatory and paradise. Sepultura has taken that concept and combined it with some of the events facing today's society.

The album is a return to the intensity we've come to expect from Sepultura. There are some strings and other ambient sounds in some of the songs, but they bring the thrash at full blast. The different sections of the album are separated by instrumental intros, which act as a cleansing of the musical palate before diving into the next course of brutality. Things wrap up with a instrumental signifying the "paradise" portion of the album.

These are the finest vocals Derrick Green has ever done. His angry screams are powerful and emotional and fit the music exactly. This is the best album Sepultura has released in a while, and by far the best with Green. The concept works very well, both lyrically and musically.
