Guide Review - Shadows Fall - Threads Of Life
Threads Of Life shows the band expanding their repertoire. A few songs on the album are vintage Shadows Fall, really heavy and angry with screaming vocals. In addition, several songs are really melodic with tons of hooks and singalong choruses. They are ripe for rock radio and video airplay. The band's musicianship has also stepped up a notch, with powerful drumming from Jason Bittner. Guitarists Jonathan Donais and Matthew Bachand also showcase their skills on both the electric and acoustic guitar.
Shadows Fall shows their softer side with the ballad "Another Hero Lost," inspired by the death of Brian Fair's cousin, who was stationed in Iraq. Speaking of Fair, his vocal work on the album is very good. From angry yelling to melodic singing he shows a lot of versatility.
Shadows Fall had a CD titled The Art Of Balance in 2002, but I think that title more aptly describes this album. They still have plenty of intensity and aggressiveness for metal fans, but have balanced that with more melody and accessibility to appeal to the masses.
