Guide Review - Soil - True Self

Soil's former frontman Ryan McCombs left the band to join Drowning Pool. His replacement is A.J. Cavalier, who fits right in and made it a seamless transition, as least musically. Their latest album is very melodic and groove oriented. Many songs have the potential to be hits on rock and metal radio.

While you'll hear tons of melodies, there's also plenty of intensity and metal edged songs. It's a good balance of catchy radio friendly songs and tracks that are angry and violent. Cavalier's vocals are good. He's able to sing melodically and then crank up the volume into more screaming style aggressive vocals. Fear Factory's Burton C. Bell also appears as a guest vocalist.

Replacing a vocalist is always tough, but Soil made a wise choice in A.J. Cavalier, and the band's once doubtful future looks bright again.
