Guide Review - Starkweather - Croatoan

Even though they've been around for over 15 years this is only the third album from Philadelphia's Starkweather. They've released several singles and have appeared on compilations over the years, but haven't been very prolific in the album category.

Their latest effort is very diverse metallic hardcore. Thick, chunky riffs give way to angular harder edged riffs. Tempos slow down and speed up at the drop of a hat. The vocals range from low pitched death metal growls to hardcore style yells to melodic vocals. The songs are really long, ranging from 5 to 8 minutes in length. In this case it's both positive and negative. It gives them time and space to show that diversity and versatility, but on the downside many of the songs aren't that memorable and seem to drag on forever.
