Guide Review - Twelfth Gate - Threshold Of Revelation

On their second album Chicago's Twelfth Gate gives the listener a little bit of everything. On one track they'll sound like a power metal band, and then on the next song you'll think they're a thrash band. And then they'll mix it up and throw progressive, power, traditional and thrash metal at you in the same song. You'll hear pieces and parts of bands like Nevermore, Iron Maiden and Queensryche in Twelfth Gate, but their sound is unique.

Vocalist Scott Huffman has a strong voice that's part Bruce Dickinson, part Geoff Tate. He sounds the best on the power metal type songs where he can cut loose. He does a decent job on the thrashier songs, but that power metal vibrato is there even when he's trying to sound rougher.

The guitars of Rich Knight and Jim Stopper are very good. They hammer home muddy riffs when they need to and also are able to play more complicated power/prog styles as well.
