The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above And Branches Below

Ferret Music
On their third album With Roots Above And Branches Above, The Devil Wears Prada hasn't changed their signature metalcore sound. They have refined it and improved in many areas, and the result is their strongest release to date.

Let's get the negatives out of the way first. Breakdowns come fast and furious on With Roots Above And Branches Below, and in a live setting they always get the crowd going, but on CD they get repetitive really fast.

That being said, TDWP amps up the heaviness while writing some of their catchiest songs yet. Blistering riffs and the aforementioned breakdowns intertwine with atmospheric keyboards that provide depth and a change of pace. Songs like "Gimme Half" masterfully blend brutality, atmosphere and hooks.

"Louder Than Thunder" is a ballad that starts with a piano and strings and showcases reserved melodic singing by Jeremy DePoyster. It's unexpected and very well done. DePoyster's melodic vocals have improved a lot on this CD, and are a stark contrast to the angry screaming of Mike Hranica.

Another thing The Devil Wears Prada is known for is goofy song titles, and that continues on With Roots Above And Branches Below. "Assistant To The Regional Manager," "Big Wiggly Style" and "Ben Has A Kid" are added to the pantheon of the band's crazy titles.
