The Bottom Line

Dark Funeral returns in fighting form.

  • The black metal band's best album in years.
  • A bit more varied in the songwriting department.
  • Tried and true black metal in the classic style.

  • With black metal so subdivided, this traditional style is in danger of being "quaint."

  • Released January 26, 2010 on Regain Records.
  • Dark Funeral’s fifth album.
  • Dark Funeral’s first new material in four years.

Guide Review - Dark Funeral - 'Angelus Exuro pro Eternus'

Much has changed since the unholy art form known as black metal first set the underground on fire back in the early '90s. While the fresh, new genre was at first met with impassioned responses varying from fear, hatred, obsession and adoration, time has since seen black metal undergo a societal explosion, commercialization the likes of which no one could have predicted. Then, Sweden’s Dark Funeral was at the forefront of the new wave of Swedish melodic black metal. Now, they serve as elder statesmen for the genre, releasing a much-anticipated comeback album Angelus Exuro pro Eternus.

Which begs the questions, “was it worth the wait?” and “is it any good?” The answers to both queries are “yes.” Dark Funeral has indeed returned, and they have a couple new tricks up their (black) wizard’s sleeves. The band, who have undergone many lineup changes since their inception back in ’93, with only guitarist Lord Ahriman remaining from the original lineup, had been perceived by many as running on auto-pilot for years, churning out a similar product year after year.

Angelus Exuro pro Eternus is a brave assault upon the black metal parapet, however, presenting a re-energized Dark Funeral who sound practically rabid; an established band with something to prove. Though it’s been four years since we last heard from the group, the time spent away looks to have been worthwhile, because Dark Funeral hasn’t sounded this vicious in years. Bassist/vocalist Emperor Magus Caligula should be particularly commended, as the man practically seethes his hatred through every hateful scream and hiss.

Meanwhile, Lord Ahriman’s riffs and melodies, which seemed to bleed into one another on the band’s recent releases, possess this diabolic spark to them which lend each track a sense of brutal, satanic urgency. Sure, there’s still a formula here, but who cares? Angelus Exuro pro Eternus is easily Dark Funeral’s best album years, going back at least to 1998’s Vobiscum Satanas. Welcome back, dudes…show ‘em what for!
