The band’s debut Romulus is a concept album about the Roman Empire. It features guest appearances from vocalist Nergal (Behemoth), guitarist Karl Sanders (Nile) and guitarist Obsidian C (Keep Of Kalessin). As you’d probably expect, Ex Deo sounds a lot like Kataklysm, but there are some differences.
Romulus combines death metal with symphonic elements to create an epic sound. Some intensity is sacrificed for melody and atmosphere, but there’s still plenty of aggression here. Leduc’s keyboards are a really strong influence. From subtle background atmospheres to front and center symphonic parts, the keyboards add a lot.
“In Her Dark Embrace” is a standout. It has great guitar riffs with keyboards providing a sometimes dark, sometimes bombastic atmosphere along with fierce vocals. “Blood, Courage and The Gods That Walk The Earth” features both low pitched growls and high pitched screams and some clever transitions between regal atmosphere and shredding guitars.
The lyrical concept is an interesting one as well, and Iacono’s vocals are clear enough you can understand the storyline. Kataklysm and Blackguard fans will dig Romulus, but Ex Deo will attract new fans of their one with this release.
