The British band While She Sleeps recently released The North Stands For Nothing. Guitarist Mat Welsh introduces us to his band, talking about the new album, tour plans, his musical beginnings and other topics.

Chad Bowar: Give us a brief history of While She Sleeps.
Mat Welsh: A bunch of guys met at school. We're having way to much fun to ever want a real job.

How would you describe the sound/style/genre of The North Stands For Nothing?
A psssionate, honest take on hardcore metal.

How did you decide on the album title?< br> It represents where we're from and our views on the music scene in the UK. It was the first name we though that reflected the album truly.

What has the response been like in Europe?
Awesome. Europe has a lot of respect for our music and the attention kids give over there is really refreshing.

What are your expectations for the US release?
We just hope people take the time to understand the album and appreciate what it's about. If it follows anything from the reaction in the UK and Europe we will be more than happy!

What are your upcoming tour plans?
We are currently out on tour in Europe then hitting the UK again in January. 2011 is really about touring as much as possible for us and getting anywhere we possibly can.

What are the largest and smallest crowds you've played in front of?
We have played to literally nobody. It's all fun for us just getting the chance to play onstage together. On the other hand, we have played some festival stuff with large crowds and our sold out album launch show, which was unbelievable.

Any tour horror stories?
We’ve had a bunch of stage injuries; guitars to the head and some pretty nasty stuff. As for touring, I think the worst mess we’ve been in was breaking down in Europe &andbeing stranded for days in our tiny van. Our drummer broke his hand and we got screwed over by French hospitals.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you on the road?
We once crashed into a herd of sheep and ended up with a broken windscreen with a sheep in the front of the van. It's probably the most surreal thing I’ve ever experienced.

What’s the most unusual venue you’ve played?
We played a floor show in a café in Glasgow, that was insane. We’ve played a bunch of churches (we are not religious), which are always pretty weird.

What’s the best show you’ve ever played? Worst?
The best is probably a tie between our album release show and a crazy floor show in a café in Glasgow. The worst is probably a youth center in Belgium with a sound guy who was obviously deaf, blind, dumb and possibly didn’t even have hands.

How did you get started in music?
My dad taught me to play guitar when I was a kid.

Who are some guitarists who inspired you?
Jimi Hendrix, Tom Morello, Ken Susi.

What are your all-time favorite albums?
Thrice – The Artist In The Ambulance, Comeback Kid – Wake The Dead, Sights & Sounds – Monolith, Still Remains – Of Love & Lunacy and As I Lay Dying – Shadows Are Security

What's the best movie or DVD you've seen lately?
Into The Wild. That movie will change your life!

What do you like to do outside of music?
Party, skateboard or think about music!
