Morgan Lander Interview

By Chad Bowar, About.com

Kittie
Chad Bowar: How has your clothing line Poisoned Black been received?
Morgan Lander: It's been really great. Mercedes and I have been thinking about doing something like that for a long time, and when we had the opportunity we decided to take the time to work on it. It's an extension of our personality and our music. It's been received very well considering it's all been word of mouth. A lot of bands have clothing lines, but the extent of women's stuff is a small tee shirt and a wife beater. Being women and knowing what flatters women and how a woman wants to look we play on that. We make stuff that we personally would wear. We pay more attention to style and materials and cuts. It's more for women, but we have guy stuff as well.

Does Kittie have any tour plans for the summer?
We've been on the road for two and a half months, so we're going to go home and finish up writing and arranging the album. Hopefully we'll be in the studio by the end of the summer.

What are the largest and smallest crowds you've played in front of?
We played the Dynamo Festival in Europe and the turnout was over 70,000 people. We've played to a large number of people on Ozzfest as well. It seems like the European festivals always draw a lot of people. They're really into their metal over there. Our first show ever we played in front of 10 people. That's probably the lowest. That was a long time ago.

With almost 100,000 friends on MySpace you're obviously having a lot of success using it to promote your band.
MySpace is a great tool. It helps too that the band actually runs it. We're a fan friendly type of band that lets people know how much we are grateful for them letting us live out our dreams. We've been on MySpace for over 2 years. It's really amazing. It says a lot about the band and our fans that we have that many people on there.

You've been interviewed thousands of times over the years. What's the question you're sick of answering?
The cliché of women in metal. It's a given, it's obvious. Yes, we're all women. But first and foremost we're musicians and we're songwriters. It bothers me in an article when they go on and on about us being young and women and don't pay attention to our music. We know that it sets us apart from a lot of other bands, but there's more to the band than being women. If we were solely relying on that we wouldn't be celebrating our tenth anniversary as a band.

What do you hate?
I hate eggs. I'm allergic to them.

What are your best and worst personal characteristics?
I'm really grounded and smart. I'm outgoing and have drive. My worst characteristic is that I talk too much sometimes. I don't know when to keep my mouth shut. I say a lot of stupid things because I talk so much.

What's your worst habit?
I bite the skin around my fingers. I don’t bite my nails, but it's the skin and cuticles around them. I bite them until they bleed. I also chew on the inside of my mouth sometimes. I don't have any vices like smoking.

What is your biggest fear?
I'm always afraid that this might not be here tomorrow, that things are not going to work out in the end. I'm also afraid of aliens!

What is the biggest misconception people have about you?
That we are the same now as we were in 1999. A lot of people have the wrong idea about the band. We're not 16 anymore. We're grown women. We're a normal band. We're really nice people, which is a shocker for a lot of people. Another misconception is that people always think we're taller. I'm only 5'3". Next to mini-Kiss we're the shortest band ever.

What is the best advice someone has given you?
I feel like we've had to learn a lot of things for ourselves in this industry. To stay grounded and appreciate your fans is good advice.

Do you have a celebrity crush?
I've always been partial to the singer from Silverchair, Daniel Johns. He's a very attractive young man. Also the guys in Thine Eyes Bleed.
