John LaMacchia Interview

By Chad Bowar, About.com

Chad Bowar: Who are some current artists you admire?
John LaMacchia: There’s some great music out there right now. Grizzly Bear. They’re just a really great bunch of musicians. Kayo Dot are really doing some amazing things and really pushing the boundaries. Murcof, Pole, The Tuss. The new Mogwai is fantastic. Earth is making some great music these days. There’s so much. The new Unkle is just a great rock record. I’m sure I’m forgetting some really important bands right now but these are some of my favorite things to listen to as of late.

What’s your all time favorite album?
That’s tough. I can’t really say. Some of my all time favorites are Magnified by Failure, Hail To The Thief by Radiohead, The Mirror Pool by Lisa Gerrard, The Lion and The Cobra by Sinead O’Connor, Songs From The Big Chair by Tears for Fears, [i[Grace by Jeff Buckley and Larks Tongues In Aspic by King Crimson. I’m just skimming the surface here. There have been so many records that I’ve felt such a personal and intimate connection to its just hard to say.

Who was a key mentor or motivator in your life?
My dad. He’s a carpenter and he has always dabbled in visual art. He draws and paints. He is such a knowledgeable person. My dad and my mother for sure. They’ve worked so hard, so selflessly and they were happy doing it. Or at least they made sure their kids saw it that way. I guess that’s why I keep playing music. It’s what they wanted for me. How can I stop?

What's your favorite hobby away from music?
Visual Art, drawing, photography, graphic design. Other than that, collecting vinyl and occasionally a nice piece of musical equipment. That’s about it.

What are you afraid of?
Great White sharks kind of scare the crap out of me. The idea of being in the water with something so dangerous and menacing just terrifies me. They’re massive and I can’t swim! Spiders creep me out a bit. Not much other than that. Me and the Candiria guys got hit by an 18 wheeler and lived. I don’t scare easily anymore.

What television show won't you miss or always record?
I don’t watch much TV, but “Family Guy” is definitely up there in the top five greatest shows of all time to me. That and “Arrested Development” which I guess was way too smart for the average American. “Buster” is funny. Me and my girlfriend sat in a restaurant across from him one evening. We wanted to buy him and his friends a drink so bad, but the waitress said he was drinking hot cocoa, Hysterical! Whoever decided on casting that guy as Buster did a great job.
