Early Days:
What later became Lacuna Coil started in 1994 as Sleep Of Right in Milan, Italy. When Cristina Scabbia joined the band as a vocalist they changed their name to Ethereal. After getting a record deal they discovered another band was using that name. They changed names again to Lacuna Coil, which means "empty spiral." The band members included Cristina Scabbia, Andrea Ferro, Marco Coti-Zelati, Claudio Leo, Raffaele Zagaria, and Leonardo Forti.
Turmoil:
While on tour in 1997 prior to the release of their first EP, three members (Zagaria, Leo and Forti) left the band. They were replaced by guitarist Cristiano Migliore and drummer Cristiano Mozzati. The band's self-titled EP was released in 1998. Their full-length debut In A Reverie was released in 1999, and the band also added second guitarist Marcus "Maus" Biazzi.
Growing Success:
Lacuna Coil toured tirelessly during this time and started winning fans around the world. 2001's Unleashed Memories and 2002's Comalies both received critical praise and increased the band's visibility. Their 2004 on Ozzfest also gave the band a lot of exposure and helped boost the sales of Comalies to over 250,000 copies worldwide.
Breakthrough:
2006 saw the release of Karmacode and a worldwide media blitz. Frontwoman Cristina Scabbia was featured on the cover of tons of music magazines and there was a lot of hype leading up to the album. It did very well across the world, and even debuted in the Top 30 of the U.S. album charts. It positioned Lacuna Coil as one of the most visible metal bands.
