Mastodon Profile

By , About.com Guide

Early Days:

Former Today Is The Day bandmates Brann Dailor (drums) and Bill Kelliher (vocals, guitar) relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 2000. There they met Social Infestation bassist Troy Sanders and guitarist Brent Hines. The quartet became Mastodon and quickly recorded a demo and began touring. The band's sound is complex and difficult to label, blending traditional metal with more extreme styles and incorporating some elements of sludge and grindcore.

Record Deal:

After tireless touring Mastodon inked a deal with Relapse Records and released the MCD Lifesblood in 2001. The band's full length debut Remission was released in 2002. Mastodon's breakthrough was 2004's Leviathan, which received enormous critical praise and landed on many year end best of lists. In 2006 they released Call Of The Mastodon, a collection of their early recordings. In addition, the DVD The Workhorse Chronicles was released.

Moving To A Major:

For their third full-length, Mastodon signed to major label Reprise. Blood Mountain was released in 2006 and continued the band's streak of critically successful albums.
