Nile Profile

Nuclear Blast Records

Nile is a death metal band from South Carolina famous for adding Middle Eastern elements, including Egyptian instruments and lyrics about ancient history and religion. In the decade-and-a-half Nile has been together, the band has helped to shape a unique form of death metal that was seldom heard in the late '90s.

Early Days:

Nile was formed in 1993 with the intent to combine brutal death metal with the band’s fascination with Egyptian culture and history. After five years of working their way up playing local clubs, Nile signed with Relapse Records and released their debut album Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka in 1998.

Slow Climb To Success:

From that point on, Nile evolved their sound with more acoustic interludes, stronger vocals, and lengthier songs. The band's 2007 CD Ithyphallic charted on the Billboard 200 and reached #4 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers. Karl Sanders has had a successful solo career, releasing Saurian Meditation in 2004, while bassist Chris Lollis is currently the guitarist and backing vocalist for Lecherous Nocturne.

Recommended Nile Album:

In Their Darkened Shrines
Nile's third album is where the band finally got on the right track. While their earlier albums were solid, In Their Darkened Shrines was the sound of a band confident and relentless in their sonic onslaught. “The Blessed Dead” is a fantastic opener and the epic “Unas Slayer Of The Gods” is a fan favorite. The twenty-minute four-part title track is one of Nile’s most experimental songs to date and a perfect ending to what is their magnum opus.
