Guide Review - Phobia - 'Unrelenting'

Phobia play grindcore as it should be played on Unrelenting, the new EP from this long running band. Phobia waste no time on Unrelenting with short blasts for songs, an angry political message that does not let up for a second, and a loud, rough production.

Songs proceed at a ramped up, frenetic, d-beat pace, the guitars are loud, the vocals alternatively angrily bark and screech, and tracks are typically under a minute in length, including a couple of gems clocking in at around 10 seconds. All of it blows by very quickly, prompting you to reach for the “repeat” button to take it all in.

Lately, grindcore has suffered somewhat from overly clean releases from some of the genre’s most well known names, but releases such as Unrelenting are going a long way towards reestablishing grindcore as the rough, under the radar genre that it should be. In short, Unrelenting is a just that, an unrelenting assault of straight up grindcore, no more, no less.
