Guide Review - Catacombs - In The Depths Of R'Lyeh

If you see a CD with 6 songs, you might assume it's an EP. Not so here. Even with only 6 tracks, this album clocks in at over an hour. Most songs are over 10 minutes long, with two being 16 minutes long.

Catacombs plays slow, intense and bleak funeral style doom metal. You'll also hear elements of black and death metal. There are vocals, but they are extremely low pitched and buried way deep in the mix, so they sound more like a dull roar or animal growl.

The songs are well-constructed with some decent riffs, and the reason the songs are so long is to get the full effect of the doom and gloom. There are subtle changes within the songs, but for those with short attention spans it does get a little monotonous.
