Guide Review - Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra

This album is just like Devin Townsend: a little strange but filled with moments of musical genius. Unlike his Strapping Young Lad project, this has a lot more softer parts.

Synchestra is so diverse that it is almost experimental. And most of the experiments work. If it had to be categorized, progressive metal would be the closest genre, but it is so much more than that. There are soft acoustic songs, long prog metal influenced tracks, heavy thrash influenced songs and even a polka. You heard me right, a polka.

It's also a very vocally diverse recording. Townsend combines laid back singing with powerful melodic singing and aggressive screaming. If Strapping Young Lad is the dark side of his personality, Devin Townsend Band is the lighter side. There are some dark and intense sections on this album, but it is much more positive and upbeat album overall.
