Guide Review - Gorefest - La Muerte

The Dutch death metal band Gorefest split up in 1998. After 6 years apart they reunited in 2004 and this is their first new release since 1998's Chapter 13. Their latest effort is named after the Spanish word for death.

Vocalist Jan-Chris de Koeijer has a very unique sounding voice. It's deep and kind of gurgly sounding, but his death metal style vocals are understandable, which is pretty unusual, especially for someone whose native language isn't English.

Musically Gorefest returns to their roots with dirty, gritty sounding riffs, double bass and angry lyrics. It's dark and grim, just what a good death metal album should be. The closing 10 minute instrumental gets a little tedious, but it's great to have Gorefest back and making music again.
