Ozzy Osbourne - Under Cover

About.com Rating 4

By Chad Bowar, About.com

The Bottom Line

Even though his brain might be a bit addled from decades of substance abuse, Ozzy's voice still sounds great. He shows many different sides and has picked a wide variety of artists to cover.

Guide Review - Ozzy Osbourne - Under Cover

Originally included as part of his Prince Of Darkness Box Set, Under Cover is now available as a single CD with 3 additional songs. Ozzy chose the songs to cover that he listened to growing up in the '60s and '70s. From Creem's psychedelic "Sunshine Of Your Love" to the mellow John Lennon song "Woman," Osbourne shows surprising depth and versatility. It's very odd to hear Ozzy Osbourne singing a Beatles song, but he nails "In My Life."

Osbourne also recruited some of the original artists to help out on his versions. Leslie West plays a guitar solo on Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," and Mott The Hoople's Ian Hunter lends backing vocals to "All The Young Dudes."

Along with harder rocking artists like the Rolling Stones, Ozzy also does versions of songs by mellower groups like the Moody Blues. You can tell he's a huge Beatles fan since two Lennon songs and a Beatles song are among the 13 on the CD.
