Venom Profile

Early Days:

The British black metal band formed in the late '70s as Guillotine. After reducing their numbers from a quintet to a trio, they rechristened themselves Venom, made up of vocalist/bassist Conrad "Cronos" Lant, guitarist Jeff "Mantas" Dunn and drummer Tony "Abaddon" Bray. Their debut album Welcome To Hell was released in 1981.

Groundbreaking Album:

In 1982 Venom's second album Black Metal was released. It received critical acclaim and is still thought of as one of the greatest metal albums ever recorded and named a genre. Their next two albums were also very successful.

Lineup Changes:

A series of lineup changes slowed the band's momentum. In 1985 Mantas left, followed by vocalist Cronos in 1987. The next few albums had several different lineups and weren't as well received as Venom's earlier work.

In 1996 Cronos rejoined the band after Mantas had returned in 1989. Their 2000 album, appropriately titled Resurrection, received very positive response.

Essential Venom Album:

Black Metal
The band's second album was so groundbreaking an entire subgenre of metal was named after it. Even today it sounds extreme, so imagine its effect when it was released back in 1982. This is an essential album not just for Venom or black metal fans, but for fans of all extreme metal.
